The Gibson Custom 1957 Murphy Lab Les Paul Custom pays tribute to a guitar that Paul thought looked particularly good onstage. The “Black Beauty” finish contrasted with the white cuffs of his sleeves, allowing the audience to fully take in his fancy fretwork. Like the original, this version gets three humbuckers and a Bigsby, all in gold. A Murphy Lab Light aging is the icing on the cake.
The ’57 Custom has a solid mahogany body for rich sustain and an even tone. The Murphy Lab gives it a Light aging—you’ll see dings, pick scrapes and lacquer checking all over the instrument. It looks like a guitar with decades of average play wear.
Fans of ‘50s neck profiles will dig the Murphy Lab Les Paul Custom. The mahogany neck sports a chunky C-shape for a fat—but not baseball bat—feel; a long tenon neck joint ensures maximum sustain. The Ebony fretboard has rolled, comfortable edges like a worn, vintage Gibson.
The ’57 Les Paul Custom comes with three CustomBuckers, which represent Gibson’s ultimate take on the historic P.A.F. pickup. They’re unpotted for historical accuracy, so you might experience squeaks and squeals at high volumes, but hey, that never stopped Neil Young. Expect warm, thick tones—these humbuckers are the real deal.
In the early days, Gibson offered the Bigbsy vibrato for an upcharge. Here, it’s standard—and a can’t miss in gold. The tune-o-matic bridge keeps the intonation in check; Kluson Waffleback tuners are period-correct. All of the gold hardware has an aged patina to match the finish.
