The infamous Moderne returns with Gibson’s Moderne XI, a solidbody electric guitar that can best be described as way, way ahead of its time. Far from a straight 1958 reissue like the coveted Moderne models released back in 1982, this modern captures the spirit of Gibson’s black-sheep guitar, but provides you with exciting new twists that make the Moderne XI a unique instrument in its own right as well. A body of grade-A mahogany combined with a quartersawn mahogany neck and a gorgeous granadillo fretboard give you rich harmonics and excellent sustain, all of which are brought to life via a pair of ’57 Classic PAF-style humbuckers. To understand this unlikely Moderne XI guitar, you have to go back to 1958, when Gibson was actively pushing the limits of guitar design by coming up with wild new body styles. The original Moderne was presented along side the first ever Flying V and Explorer models. Suffice it to say, it was not as well received as its litter mates, and that’s why you don’t see a dozen flavors of Moderne guitars floating around these days. Was it too cool for 1958? Perhaps. Once you’ve got the Moderne XI electric guitar in your hands you’ll be free to judge for yourself.
Here’s one of the greatest ways in which the Gibson Moderne XI differs from the original ’58 Moderne electric guitars: the neck. Rarely found on even the most performance-driven Gibson guitar models today, the Moderne XI’s Slim Fast neck profile is… well, both slim and fast. Made from quartersawn mahogany, you can feel free to pull of neck bends, without fearing for the life of your axe. And what’s waiting for you up at the head but a dead-on and truly funky split-top headstock – just like the original. Oh, and the icing on the cake is a rare granadillo fretboard, which looks amazing and plays like butter. Give this Moderne XI a shot and you’ll never look back.
On the more authentic side, the pickups that Gibson outfitted the Moderne XI with are as true to the sound of the original unreleased model as it gets. That’s because Gibson originally engineered their ’57 Classic humbuckers to capture the warmth, smooth playing dynamics, and overall character of their breakthrough PAFs.
