As a principal guitarist and songwriter of Maná, Sergio Vallín has graced the world with his tasteful guitar work on hits like “Clavado En Un Bar,” “Mi Verdad,” and “Amor Clandestino,” helping transform the Latin Grammy winners into a household name. With adventurous sounds and an omnivorous style that pulls from classic rock, old-school ska, reggae, Caribbean calypso, and more, Maná’s diverse setlists require a workhorse guitar. That’s why Sergio relies on the Gibson Les Paul as a primary instrument. This new Gibson Custom Shop Sergio Vallín Les Paul Goldtop is his tool of choice. It features ’50s-style specs with period-accurate tonewoods, hardware, and electronics, including a Gibson Custombucker PAF-style pickup in the bridge and a soapbar P-90 in the neck, and a Bigsby vibrato system. Offering a perfect blend of vintage design with modern amenities, this special Custom Shop creation is limited to just 100 guitars.
Built to Sergio Vallín’s specs, this limited Custom Shop creation combines some of the best aspects of ’50s Gibsons into one guitar. The construction is faithful to original Goldtop Les Pauls with its solid mahogany body, mahogany neck, 2-piece maple top, and Indian rosewood fingerboard. While the body, neck, and fingerboard replicate a pre-’58 Les Paul, the neck features a playable but substantial ’59 “Round C” profile that made streamlined improvements to the controversial thickness of prior ’50s necks. Also onboard are Vintage-style Kluson tuners, a rock-solid Tune-o-matic bridge, and a built-in Bigsby B7 vibrato system — the latter a rare find on a stock Les Paul. And of course, all nickel hardware is aged using proprietary Gibson Custom Shop methods.
The onboard pickup combination of a Gibson Custombucker and a soapbar P-90 deliver exceptional versatility and warm vintage tones that are a Les Paul player’s dream. The Custombucker pickup in the bridge position features PAF-style wiring for slightly lower output with the warmth that’s a hallmark of vintage Gibson guitars. These unpotted pickups are perfect for chimey sparkling cleans such as reggae upstrums, yet they also shift easily to high-drive power with classic rock tone. The neck’s full-sized soapbar P-90 echoes Gibson’s early P-90 designs. Together, this combo gives you access to a wide tonal pallet of humbucker and single coil tones in one guitar. Plus, the Gibson Custom Shop Sergio Vallín Les Paul Goldtop features 500k audio taper potentiometers with excellent knob response and paper-in-oil capacitors that develop more depth as your guitar ages.
Meticulously handcrafted by Gibson’s elite luthiers in the company’s Nashville Custom Shop, the Gibson Custom Shop Sergio Vallín Les Paul Goldtop — like every Gibson Custom guitar — is optimized for playability before leaving the factory. The fingerboard is polished and beveled with rolled edges before being bound, then given the Plek Pro treatment. The computer-guided Plek Pro process analyzes neck relief and the height of the nut and bridge. After analysis, the machine scans, levels, and dresses your guitar’s frets to a microscopic level of accuracy — Pleking delivers perfect intonation and ideal action with no fret buzz or loss of sustain. In addition, Custom Shop creations use only the finest tonewoods available and combine them with vintage-accurate hardware and electronics; it’s an unbeatable Gibson experience you won’t find anywhere else.
