Classic Hollowbody Electric from Gibson
The ES series of Gibson emerged on the scene over 80 years ago and changed the world of electric guitars forever. Conjuring the spirit of the ES-175 as well as the ES-350, the Gibson ES-275 Custom Metallic Series is not only a beautiful blend of two classics, but is an instrument all its own, a new vision born from an iconic pedigree. With a slightly smaller body than either the 175 or 350, the ES-275 still retains all the unique tonal signatures of a classic archtop hollowbody, but lets you drive the volume a little higher without the risk of feedback. And with a timeless rounded “C” neck with rolled binding and a dark rosewood fingerboard, the ES-275 offers that response and playability that made the ES series a standard among jazz, blues, and rock ‘n’ roll players alike. From Chet Atkins and Billy Byrd to Hank Garland and Chuck Berry, the ES series of archtop guitars has found its way onto the stage and into the studio of some of the most iconic performances and hits of the past 60 years.
Classic tonewood pairing
The Gibson Memphis ES-275 Custom Metallic Series begins with a 3-ply maple/poplar/maple body — a truly classic tonewood pairing known for its gorgeous resonance and even tonal output through the high, mid, and low ranges. Strike a wide-open, first-position chord, and listen to the balanced, robust results. Grab a barred chord up the neck, strum it with a heavy pick, and listen to the captivating voicing of a major or minor chord that rings through the high, mid, and low ranges, perfectly blended, beautifully balanced. If fingerstyle is your thing, the ES-275 is ideal for softer approaches to chording and counterpoint lead as well — great for jazz, blues, or even ambient.
PAF-style pickups kick out vintage tone
But the ES-275 is not just a jazz/blues guitar. It can also rock out, thanks to a pair of unpotted MHS humbucker pickups. These pickups evoke all the warm, gritty tone of ’50s-style PAFs and let you really dig in on chord attacks or on aggressive lead — as well as all the more subtle stylings the ES series is known for in jazz. Modern blues-rock player Joe Bonamassa has recently added an ES-275 to his lineup and loves the versatility of these pickups as they move effortlessly through cranked up, crunchy tones as well as clean, floating high and midrange.
Stellar neck for great feel and response
The quartersawn, C-shaped mahogany neck on the ES-275 offers stellar feel and has that distinctly brighter tone due to its density. The dark rosewood fingerboard on this superb neck is smooth, fast, and responsive. And with 22 medium-jumbo, 18% nickel silver frets, you get hours of comfortable playing and stellar tone from each note.
Vintage appointments
This ES-275 is decked out in all sorts of vintage appointments. For fans of vibrato, the ES-275 features a Bigsby B-6 vibrato tailpiece, giving you all kinds of stylistic touches as you explore your own unique playing. An ABR-1 bridge with titanium saddles and rosewood base provides precise intonation and tuning stability and vintage looks. Grover Imperial tuners — a favorite among players here at Sweetwater — are known as top-of-the-line machines that not only look great but keep you in tune. Stunning, genuine mother-of-pearl full-block inlays adorn the dark rosewood fingerboard as well. Topping it all off is a classic nitrocellulose lacquer finish that makes whatever color you choose in this line really pop.
