Lovies Guitars is offering up a Vintage Gibson Howard Roberts Signature Acoustic/ Electric Guitar in a Fantastic Wine Red Finish! Howard Roberts is name a many probably gloss over, but whose playing nearly everyone has heard. Ever watched The Twilight Zone? I Love Lucy? Gilligan’s Island? then you’ve heard the guitar playing of Mr. Roberts. During his four decades as a studio musician, he played for more than a dozen classic TV shows, in addition to recording with music greats like Dean Martin and Chet Atkins; to call Howard Roberts “prolific” is a gross understatement. Of course, during the guitar boom of the early ‘60s, an artist like Roberts would have been a prime candidate for a signature model, and Epiphone would be the company to produce said model. Roberts designed his guitar with Epiphone in 1961, coming up with essentially a modified ES-175 with a round soundhole and a single neck pick-up. Later, Gibson would pick up the model and produce it until 1981, with a brief return of the series from 2005-09 with the “Fusion” model. Robert’s later forays into the music education world led to the founding of the Guitar Institute of Technology, where his legacy lives on after his passing in 1992. This instrument looks fabulous, with a modern Gibson meets Gypsy jazz kind of aesthetic. The inlays are gorgeous, especially the headstock floral pattern. The top also has classy treatments, like the ebony bridge with pearl inlays and a Howard Roberts name plate on the tailpiece. Cosmetically as well as structurally this instrument is in Fantastic Shape, especially considering its age, however, there are a a fair bit of finish marks on the body, a small finish crack on the neck and a bit of hardware tarnish, easy 9/10! This guitar plays wonderfully and has a great sound for jazz and the neck pick-up is nice and mellow with a beautiful warmth to it. It is also worth noting that this guitar is a factory second, though our in-house luthier was unable find any obvious manufacturer flaws, and the reason for that designation could have blended in over time. All Original- NO Breaks, Cracks or Repairs! Includes Original Hard-Shell Case!!!!!!
